UEFA is considering fundamentally changing the format of the Champions League and the approach to broadcasting matches starting in 2027. Sport24.az reports that the COPE portal reported this.
According to the source, negotiations between interested parties have been going on for about eight months, but no final decision has been made yet. However, the outlines of potential reforms have already emerged.
According to the plan, the tournament will still be known as the Champions League and 36 teams will participate. However, instead of a single group stage, the teams will be divided into two subgroups:
The first group will include the 18 clubs with the highest UEFA ranking.
The second group consists of the remaining 18 teams.
Each club will play eight matches - four at home and four away - but against opponents in their own group.
UEFA is also considering abandoning the traditional sale of rights to television channels. Instead, it could launch a Netflix-like platform for the Champions League. This will allow fans to watch matches at a more affordable price and significantly increase clubs' TV revenues.
It should be noted that the reform is still being developed and final decisions will be made later.
