US President Donald Trump has called on Australian authorities to grant permanent asylum to Iran's women's national team after participating in the Asian Cup.
İdman.Biz reports that five players from Iran's women's national team reportedly fled the team's camp after being eliminated from the tournament in Australia.
"Australia is making a terrible humanitarian mistake by allowing Iran's Women's National Football Team to be forced to return to Iran, where they will most likely be killed. Don't do it, Mr. Prime Minister. Grant them asylum. If you don't, the US will take them. Thank you for paying attention to this matter," Trump said in a post on social media.
Earlier, Iranian state television host Mohammad Reza Shahbazi criticized the players for not singing the national anthem in one of their matches, saying: "Traitors should be treated more harshly in times of war." Following these events, FIFPro appealed to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to ensure the safety of the players.
