Former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain must learn from last season and approach the new Champions League with full concentration.
Idman.biz reports that, according to him, the debut year of the updated tournament format showed that it is impossible to be complacent even in the initial stage.
Rummenigge noted that last season, big clubs had to qualify for the 1/8 finals through the play-offs, which was a serious test. He emphasized that the new format makes the tournament more interesting, requiring teams to perform at their best from the first matches.
"Big clubs realized that they had to give everything from the beginning to get into the top eight," he said in an interview with the DPA agency.
Rummenigge also commented on Uli Hoeness' words calling Bayern the Hoffenheim of the Champions League. The Munich legend emphasized that such a comparison is not correct: "We have never been among those lagging behind. We may not always be the favorite, but that's not bad either."
