"River Plate" has announced a major renovation of its home stadium, "Estadio Monumental," which also hosts the Argentine national football team.
Lent.az reports, citing foreign media, that the project plans to increase the stadium's capacity from the current 85,000 to 101,000 spectators. The renovation of "Estadio Monumental" is expected to take approximately 18 months and cost an estimated more than $100 million.
"This is a historic day. "River Plate" continues on the path of modernization, development, and leadership in sports infrastructure, consolidating its status as the largest and most important stadium in America and setting a new global standard," said Stefano Di Carlo, president of "River Plate."
The reconstruction of the "Monumental" stadium will make it the second largest football stadium in the world, second only to Barcelona's "Camp Nou" stadium, which has a capacity of 105,000 spectators.
Nominally, the largest football stadium in the world is the "1st of May" stadium in Pyongyang, with a capacity of approximately 114,000 spectators. However, it last hosted a football game in 2017.
"Estadio Monumental" was built in 1938. It has hosted the World Cup final (1978), two Copa America finals (1987, 2011), and a Copa Libertadores final (2024). "Estadio Monumental" is expected to host a match of the 2030 World Cup.
