Benfica captain Nicolas Otamendi commented on his team's defeat to Qarabag (2:3) in the first round of the Champions League group stage. Sport24.az reports that the Argentinian footballer made a statement to Sport TV regarding this:
"It's a very painful result. The road will be long, and after the first round, no one can guarantee that we will win all matches. We must take responsibility and apologize to the fans who pay to watch our game. Nothing worked out for us today."
The Benfica captain emphasized that they need to draw conclusions from the defeat:
"We need to improve a bit more. We can't concede goals from set-pieces after being 2:0 up. We need to work even harder to show great football. The season has just started, and our stadium must become a real hell for opponents."
Otamendi also said that the fans have reasons to be dissatisfied: "They pay for tickets, so they have reasons to protest. But no one can save themselves here alone - when we win, we win together, and when we lose, the collective must be self-critical."
