Benfica captain Nicolas Otamendi commented on his team's sensational defeat (2:3) to "Qarabag" of Agdam in the first round of the Champions League group stage.
Idman.biz reports that the captain stated that he was upset with the results of the game.
"This is a painful result. The road will be long and after the first round no one can guarantee that we will win all the matches. We must take responsibility and apologize to the fans who paid to see us. Nothing worked for us today," Otamendi said on Sport TV.
The Argentinian player noted that the team must draw conclusions from this and move forward: "Individually, we need to improve. We can't be 2:0 ahead and then concede goals from set pieces. We need to work even harder to show great football. The season has just started and our stadium should become real hell for our rivals."
Otamendi also emphasized that fans have the right to express their dissatisfaction:
"They pay for their tickets, so they have the right to protest. But no one can save themselves here alone - when we win, we win together, and when we lose, the team must collectively self-criticize."
