Former "Napoli" midfielder Marek Hamšík is a candidate for the position of head coach of the Slovakian national team. This was reported by the Slovakian press, according to Sport24.az.
Marek decided to end his career for the second time in the summer of 2025. After that, the former midfielder became one of the owners of the "Dukla" (Banska Bystrica) club and led their youth team. The legend of Slovak football also took over the position of manager in the national team.
During his playing career, Hamšík won two Italian Cups and one Italian Super Cup, and was named "Napoli"'s "Player of the Year" eight times. The Slovakian won the Turkish Super Cup and the Turkish Super League with "Trabzonspor". Hamšík holds the record for the number of matches played for the Slovakian national team - 138 games, scoring 26 goals and providing 21 assists.
It should be noted that Slovakia, coached by Italian coach Francesco Calzona, failed to qualify for the DÇ-2026. They took second place in Group A (after the highest-ranked Germany). Later, Calzona's team lost to Kosovo (3:4) in the play-off semi-final.
