Liverpool fans have raised more than £226,995 (approximately AZN 520,000) to fund a mass football program launched in honor of deceased footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.
İdman.biz reports this news with reference to the official website of the "Reds".
"After the tragic death of the brothers in July, fans respectfully remembered Diogo by writing his name on the back of their shirts or buying commemorative shirts from club stores. All proceeds were directed to the club's official charity fund, which is developing a mass football program in Diogo's honor.
To date, a total of £226,995 has been raised, which will go directly to the creation and maintenance of the overall program. More details will be announced later.
Liverpool will also create other permanent memorials: thousands of flowers remaining at Anfield will be composted and used in flower gardens throughout the club's grounds.
The remaining items will be recycled by a specialized company and used to create a permanent memorial. A temporary area has been kept at the stadium for visitors to express their respects," the statement said.
On July 3 this year, 28-year-old Jota died in a car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora. His brother Andre Silva also died in the accident. Jota played for Pachush de Ferreira, Porto, Atletico Madrid, Wolverhampton and Liverpool.
Liverpool has permanently given the number 20 jersey to Jota. After that, there will be no football player with number 20 in the Liverpool squad.
