The head of the Spanish club Real Madrid, Florentino Perez, played a decisive role in the election of Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
İdman.Biz reports that this was reported by El Confidencial.
According to reports, during the presidential elections, Laporta was required to deposit 124.6 million euros (250 million AZN) into the club's accounts. However, he did not have sufficient financial resources to pay this amount.
At this point, Perez intervened in the process by directly contacting the bank management. The bank initially hesitated to approve the payment. The reason was that Barcelona was experiencing a serious financial crisis at that time and could not guarantee that it would fulfill its obligations on time.
Nevertheless, as a result of Perez's insistence, the bank finally agreed.
According to the source, the main reason why the president of Real Madrid took this step was that he saw Laporta as an ally in the European Super League project. However, Barcelona later decided to withdraw from the project.
It should be noted that the creation of the European Super League was announced in April 2021. The project included the clubs Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, Atletico, Milan, Inter, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal. After UEFA's threat of sanctions, the project was suspended and almost all of the participants withdrew from the Super League.
