FIFA President Gianni Infantino has shared his thoughts on the possibility of World Cup matches not being held in Mexico this summer due to the tense situation in the country. Sport24.az reports that the head of the supreme football body gave a statement to the "AS" publication regarding this:
"The situation is calm, everything is normal at the moment. Overall, everything should go smoothly."
It is worth recalling that as a result of a special operation by the Mexican Armed Forces on February 24, Nemesio Oseguera, the leader of one of the country's largest drug cartels, the "Jalisco New Generation" (CJNG) organization, known as "El Mencho", was killed. After that, riots broke out in several cities in Mexico. In several cities, including Guadalajara, which will host the Spain-Uruguay match, cartel members set cars on fire and blocked roads.
It should be noted that the 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be held in three countries - the USA, Mexico and Canada - from June 11 to July 19. In Mexico, the tournament matches will be held in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
