FIFA is considering moving the 2026 World Cup games scheduled to take place in Mexico, as well as the intercontinental play-off matches, to the USA or Canada due to the massive riots taking place in Mexico.
"Report" reports with reference to "The Athletic" that this is due to the tension in the country after the Mexican special services killed Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the head of the "Jalisco New Generation" drug cartel nicknamed "El Mencho" on February 22.
According to reports, the mass riots and armed clashes committed by criminal groups in several cities of the country have already led to the postponement of some games of the local football championship. FIFA officials have stressed that if security guarantees are not provided, they may change the venue of the play-off tournament scheduled to be held in Guadalajara and Monterrey in March.
A total of 13 matches are planned to be held in Mexico, including the opening match of the World Cup. The supreme football body, which is currently closely monitoring the situation, considers the relocation of games as a last resort if security risks remain.
It should be noted that the 2026 World Cup will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
