Two players from the Turkish Super League may face imprisonment for betting on matches. Sport24.az reports that the "Sabah" newspaper has reported on this.
Among the suspects are "Fenerbahce" captain Mert Hakan Candas and "Galatasaray" player Metehan Baltacı.
The "Fenerbahce" player could be imprisoned for up to 17 years, and the "Galatasaray" footballer for up to 13 years.
Investigators discovered that Baltacı bet on the "Galatasaray" - "Rizespor" match in March 2021 and the "Galatasaray" - "Göztepe" match in April of the same year. Although he was not in the starting lineup in these matches, he was on the bench as a substitute. He placed bets on the games as a regular user, without informing the bookmakers that he was a professional footballer.
It should be noted that last year the head of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, announced that 149 referees had been removed from football for betting on football matches. It later became known that 1024 players were also suspected of betting.
