The high-profile scandal involving betting on football matches in the Turkish championship is expanding.
İdman.Biz reports that, according to the "Sabah" publication, two football players from two giant clubs of the local Super League have been investigated.
It is about Mert Hakan Yandaş, the captain of "Fenerbahçe", and Metahan Baltacı, a member of "Galatasaray". According to the source, Yandaş could face up to 17 years in prison, and Baltacı up to 13 years.
The investigation found that Baltacı bet on the matches "Galatasaray" - "Rizespor" in March 2021 and "Galatasaray" - "Göztepe" in April of the same year. Although the football player was not in the starting lineup, he was on the game application and could theoretically appear on the field. It is reported that when betting, he did not inform bookmakers about his professional footballer status.
It should be noted that the process continues against the background of a large-scale campaign against violations in Turkish football. Last year, the head of the Turkish Football Federation, Ibrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, announced the removal of 149 referees for participating in the betting scandal. Later, it became known that suspicions also extended to more than a thousand football players.
