The Wanda Nara-Mauro Icardi-Maxi Lopez triangle, one of the most talked-about scandals in the football world, has resurfaced after years of ongoing controversy.
According to Lent.az, citing foreign media, former Argentinian footballer Gonzalo Bergessio, speaking about the incident, claimed that the Sicilian Mafia tried to take revenge on Icardi for Maxi Lopez.
Maxi Lopez and Wanda Nara, who married in 2008, separated in 2013 after a love scandal involving Lopez's teammate Mauro Icardi. This event caused a great stir in the football world, and Wanda Nara and Icardi married in 2014.
The scandal has resurfaced years later, and former Argentinian footballer Gonzalo Bergessio has claimed that the Sicilian Mafia tried to take revenge on Icardi for Maxi Lopez.
Bergessio said on DSports Radio's Más de una Copa program: "They told Maxi: "If you want, we can stalk that guy." Maxi said: "No, no, let's end it here."
Bergessio, stating that he personally witnessed the incident, said: "I was there, nobody told me. They really wanted to get him. If you ask if Maxi saved his life, I would literally say yes."
Another footballer, Pablo Alvarez, confirmed Bergessio's claims, claiming that a well-known local criminal directly forced Icardi to leave the club without renewing his contract.
Although Wanda Nara and Icardi's marriage ended in 2025, this forbidden love story is etched in the memory of the football world. Despite the passing of years, these mafia-related claims have brought the incident back into the headlines.
