The situation with stray dogs in Morocco has caused serious discussions ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the country. A coalition defending animal welfare claims that up to three million dogs are planned to be destroyed.
İdman.Biz reports that activists have appealed to FIFA on the issue, demanding intervention. According to them, inhumane methods are used against animals in the country under the name of "restoring order".
According to activists, dogs are killed with poisoned food and injections, and in some cases they are shot. It is reported that animals die in agony, and the corpses remain on the streets. The coalition has called for a more humane solution to the problem.
Public representatives have also expressed their views on the matter. American actor Mark Ruffalo wrote on social media that it is immoral to kill millions of dogs in preparation for a sporting event:
Killing millions of dogs to prepare for a sporting event is immoral. There are humane solutions, choose compassion, not violence.
Moroccan officials deny allegations of cruelty to animals. However, discontent around the issue continues, and the international community's attention is focused on this issue.
