The schedule for the 2025 Intercontinental Cup has been announced. Sport24.az reports with reference to the official website of FIFA that on September 14, the Egyptian team "Pyramids" (winner of the CAF Champions League) will meet with the New Zealand club "Auckland" (winner of the OFC Champions League).
The winner will meet on September 23 in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) with "Al Ahli" (winner of the AFC Champions League). The Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup will also be played in this meeting.
On December 10, the Mexican club "Cruz Azul" (winner of the CONCACAF Champions Cup) will meet with the winner of the Libertadores Cup, which will be announced on November 29.
The winners of the second and third games will compete for a place in the final on December 13, and the winner of the fourth game will face PSG (winner of the UEFA Champions League). The final is scheduled for December 17.
It should be noted that in 1960-1979 the cup was held in two matches, and in 1960-1968 the number of victories was taken into account: if each club won once, a third match was held. This system was used in the Copa Libertadores. Since 1969, the standard European system has been applied, taking into account goals scored away and at home.
Since 1980, only one game has been held at the National Stadium in Tokyo. In 2002-2004, the match was played at the stadium in Yokohama - the arena of the 2002 World Cup final match. Then the Intercontinental Cup was replaced by the Club World Cup and was restored only 20 years later.
In 2024, the first cup game in the last 20 years was held at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, and Real Madrid defeated the Mexican club Pachuca 3:0. Now the competition will be organized in a new format.
