The World Karate Championship held in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, has already ended. Azerbaijani athletes won only two bronze medals in the competition, one of which was in para-karate.
So, how can the results of the World Championship be assessed?
With this question, Idman.Biz addressed Ulvi Guliyev, the president of the Azerbaijan Karate Federation (AKF).
"We expected a lot from this world championship. Because during the year, our athletes performed successfully both at the CIS Games and at the Islamic Games. We were expecting "gold" from Irina Zaretska. Para-karateka Vidadi Khaligov was required to reach at least the final. Unfortunately, both of them won only bronze medals," said Ulvi Guliyev.
The AKF president continued his thought by emphasizing that some athletes tend to blame their defeats on the referees, but this world championship confirmed that the athletes were right:
"The referees really disappointed us with their incomprehensible decisions. For example, in the fight for third place, the opponent broke Asiman Gurbanli's cheekbone. Imagine, he didn't even get a warning for this! Although he should have been disqualified immediately. Madina Sadigova has faced referee injustice many times...
We were expecting different results. We were hoping to win at least one gold medal and two more medals of different values. But as a result, we were able to win only two medals, one of which was in para-karate. At the end of the year, we will hold discussions and analyze the results so that we can prepare better for the new calendar year and achieve better results."
