Unlike the national wrestling championship, the Azerbaijan boxing championship became an arena for competition not only for men, but also for women.
Ilkin Agayev, the head coach of the Azerbaijani women's national boxing team, spoke about the results of the competition and the prospects of young athletes in an interview with Idman.Biz.
According to the expert, the tournament confirmed a serious generational change in this sport.
"The girls competed for medals in four weight categories. I admit that I was satisfied with all our champions, but I would especially like to single out Lala Madatova (48 kg) and Jamila Sultanli (51 kg). A noteworthy point is that three of our new champions were born in 2006, and one in 2007. This fact clearly shows that Azerbaijani women's boxing has a future. Our goal is to make the new generation competitive in the world arena. We will see the real level of our athletes very soon. In April, Baku will host the traditional international "Silk Road Cup" tournament, and it is there that the true potential of our boxers will be revealed," said Ilkin Agayev.
