French MMA fighter Ciryl Gane apologized to fans and his opponent Tom Aspinall after their title fight at UFC 321 ended in a no-contest.
Idman.Biz reports that the fight between Gane and English UFC heavyweight champion Aspinall, which took place at UFC 321 in Abu Dhabi, was declared a no-contest.
This was caused by Gane accidentally poking his opponent in the eye at the end of the first round. Aspinall was unable to continue the fight due to bleeding and temporary vision impairment.
"I apologize to the fans, my opponent, and myself. A lot of energy was spent for such a result. This is sport. I prepared according to my plan, I was executing my fight plan. Unfortunately, that's how things turned out," Gane said after the fight.
It should be noted that the failed match between Gane and Aspinall was the second title fight in UFC history to end in a no-contest. The first time such a case occurred, the reason was injury.
