The issue surrounding whether our local boxers are capable of winning the world championship continues to be debated.
Are our local boxers, rather than foreigners brought into the national team, capable of becoming world champions?
Idman.Biz addressed this question to Agasi Mammadov, the 2003 world champion and current head coach of the Azerbaijan youth boxing team.
"I think that a world champion from local boxers may emerge in the near future. This is neither optimism nor my desire as a coach. I just see that this or that athlete has the potential and can repeat my success. For example, we are talking about 19-year-old Muhammad Gasimzade, who competes in the 60 kg weight category. I am sure that he will already be the strongest on the planet in his weight category in 2027," Agasi Mammadov noted.
Let us remind you that Elchin Alizadeh, the former world vice-champion, stated in an interview with Idman.Biz that there are currently no boxers in Azerbaijan at the level of Agasi Mammadov or Rovshan Huseynov.
