"The Azerbaijani women's basketball team will face more suitable teams in the preliminary round of the 2029 European Championship compared to previous ones."
This was stated by the head coach of the national team, Evren Alkaya.
"Compared to EURO-2025 and EURO-2027, we will face more suitable opponents in the preliminary round of EURO-2029. For example, Belgium, which was in our group in 2025, has already become the European champion. Those opponents were really very strong for us," said the Turkish specialist.
He noted that the main goal is the development of young players.
"We compete in tournaments with young players. These competitions are preparatory in nature for us for the Division B games that will be held in the summer. Our main goal is to ensure that these children, with the opportunities we have, grow up to become future players for Azerbaijani women's basketball," he said in a statement to report.az.
E.Alkaya spoke about his plans for the squad:
"Our first games in the preliminary round of EURO-2029 will take place between November 11-17. We will face Ireland and Iceland. We think we will play better if we can add 2-3 experienced basketball players to the squad. We have a long process ahead of us. We believe that new players will also show themselves. We will do our best for the development of our basketball."
It should be noted that the Azerbaijani national team will compete with Switzerland, Iceland and Ireland in Group A, where it is located in the preliminary round of EURO-2029.
