Aslan Abakarov, an Azerbaijani wrestler who was disqualified for 3 years due to doping, took the drug without consulting a doctor.
The press service of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation told "Report" about this.
It was reported that the results of the doping test given by the athlete after the Azerbaijan Championship organized in 2024 were positive:
"He won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling in the 97 kg weight category at the Azerbaijan Championship in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling held at the Baku Sports Palace in 2024. After that competition, AMADA employees took test samples from all athletes, including Aslan Abakarov. That doping test was positive. Despite the athlete's appeal, the reasons given were not accepted, and he was disqualified. The athlete justifies it by saying that he took medicine according to a doctor's prescription in Russia because he was sick. However, he did not know that the drug contained doping. As a result, the doping test was positive.
In fact, every national member must inform the team doctor about this before taking any medicine. After consulting with the doctor, he can take the medicine if permission is given. But Aslan took the medicine without consulting a doctor. We hold seminars almost every year in cooperation with AMADA. Because the doping list is constantly expanding, new substances are added, and prohibited drugs are shown. Athletes are instructed. Those who do not follow the rules face such problems. It is gratifying that no leading member of the national team has faced a doping problem in recent years. Every athlete has been informed about the importance of consulting with the team doctor when taking medication."
It should be noted that Aslan Abakarov was sentenced to 36 months for the presence of a prohibited substance or its metabolites or markers in the sample and for the use or attempted use of a prohibited substance or prohibited method by the athlete. The term of the sanction applied on February 7 will expire on February 7, 2028.
