The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) have published a report on the scale of online abuse against athletes on social media.
İdman.biz reports that the organizations presented data from the "Threat Matrix by Signify Group" service.
This service has been operating since January 2024 to protect tennis players and their family members from online violence. The service uses artificial intelligence and is available on major social media platforms.
It analyzed messages and comments on the pages of approximately 8,300 tennis players who play in WTA and ITF World Tennis Tour events, as well as Grand Slam tournaments.
In 2024, "Threat Matrix" examined 1.6 million messages and comments on tennis players' social media accounts. Approximately 8,000 comments, written from 4,200 accounts, were deemed abusive or threatening. Information about the owners of 15 accounts was handed over to law enforcement agencies due to the most serious threats.
In total, 458 tennis players received insults and threats in 2024. 26% of the detected insults were directed at just five athletes. The tennis players themselves sent 56 threat complaints during the year. 77% of the threats came from people who bet on games.
