A new record has been set on Mount Everest in mountaineering.
Idman.Biz reports that 274 climbers ascended to the summit of Everest from the Nepal side, via the mountain's southern route. This is the highest figure recorded in one day for that direction.
The record coincided with a day of favorable weather conditions. According to Rishi Ram Bhandari, a representative of the Nepal Expedition Operators Association, the climbers reached the summit using the clear weather window.
The new figure surpasses the previous record set on May 22, 2019. On that day, 223 climbers ascended to the summit from the Nepal side. However, the total number was higher in 2019 because some climbers also reached the summit via the northern route in Tibet.
This year, China did not issue permits for ascents on the north side of Everest. Therefore, the main burden fell on the Nepal route. Nepal has issued 494 permits this season to climb the world's highest peak.
A problem in the glacier area at the beginning of the season caused the route to open several weeks late. This led to climbers gathering in the same weather window and increasing congestion on Everest.
It should be noted that another record was set on May 20. Russian Rustam Nabiyev went down in history as the first person to climb to the summit of Everest using only his hands.
