British skier Gabriel Gledhill pulled off a surprising stunt at the World Cup stage in Holmenkollen, Norway. The athlete completed the 50-kilometer marathon distance by accepting alcoholic beverages offered by spectators.
İdman.Biz reports that Gledhill was so impressed by the atmosphere of the race that he didn't say "no" to fans' offers of beer, schnapps and "Jägermeister" starting from the third lap. Having drunk more than 10 cans of beer during the race, the skier finished the distance in a drunken state and struggling with nausea.
Interestingly, the British athlete reached the finish line together with the leading group of female skiers who started 45 minutes after him. Although he was 20 minutes behind the winner of the men's marathon, he did not take last place. Gledhill described his experiences as follows:
"It was incredibly fun. I was pretty drunk. It was a crazy experience. The main thing in Holmenkollen is to have fun."
However, Norwegian media and sports experts sharply criticized the athlete's behavior, calling it unprofessional. Gabriel Gledhill responded to the criticism by saying, "I didn't ruin anyone's race."
It should be noted that the Holmenkollen marathon is famous for the frenzy of fans and offering various drinks to athletes, but the mass acceptance of these offers by professional athletes is considered a rare occurrence.
