In the context of a large-scale investigation into match-fixing in Greek basketball, arrest warrants have been issued for six individuals, including the president of the country’s Basketball Federation, Vangelis Liolios.
Idman.Biz reports that the investigation began in April 2026 following a complaint filed by the “Marussi” basketball club regarding the activities of the federation and its president. This was followed by eight additional complaints related to match-fixing.
As part of the investigation, 50 basketball matches held over the past decade are being examined. The suspicious games range from school competitions to the country’s top league. One match played abroad is also being reviewed.
Two witnesses interviewed by the sports prosecutor admitted to receiving money from club officials. According to court sources, they will not face criminal charges because they provided statements voluntarily.
During the investigation, €800,000 (approximately 1.6 million manats) in cash was found in the home of one of the referees living in the region. It is reported that this amount cannot be attributed to the referee’s legal income.
