On September 21, 2000, the Azerbaijani anthem was played for the first time at the Sydney Olympics above the brilliance of a gold medal. The author of this historic victory was the legend of Azerbaijani shooting, Zemfira Meftahatdinova. Her name is forever linked to a new stage in our sports history.
At the 2000 Olympics, Azerbaijan won two gold medals. But Namig Abdullayev became champion in the last days of the Olympics, while Meftahatdinova was the first to do so.
Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan, Zemfira Meftahatdinova gave an interview to Idman.biz:.
— Do you remember your feelings?
— Of course (laughs). I knew that I was the leader and the news of my victory had spread before the final was over — there were still two shots left. I pulled myself together and finished the job. Together with my coach, we set two Olympic records — they remained untouched for the next three Olympics.
— Did you understand that you were making history at that moment?
— Of course, I was very happy, I was filled with pride. Our flag was raised, the anthem of Azerbaijan was played. We were proud of the success we achieved together with my coach.
Until 2003, we did not have our own shooting range. With the support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the National Olympic Committee, we trained abroad.
After the victory, a team from Japan showed interest in our methodology and were shocked to learn that there was no shooting range in Azerbaijan. But we were able to achieve results.
— Do you celebrate this date every year?
— Of course, in my close circle. And we will definitely celebrate this 25th anniversary.
— Where do you keep the gold medal?
— I keep my awards at home, I have a small exhibition. Among them, the most striking place is occupied by the gold medal of "Sydney-2000" and the bronze medal of "Athens-2004".
