The Executive Committee of the Russian Figure Skating Federation will consider applications for changing athletes' citizenship only in May 2026.
İdman.biz reports that this was stated by the president of the organization, Anton Sikharulidze.
As it is known, Russian figure skater Veronika Zhilina wanted to move to the Azerbaijani national team, but the other party rejected this application. The International Skating Union (ISU) also hindered the athlete's transfer in this matter. Zhilina paid the federation 1 million rubles in compensation for her training. But Sikharulidze said that this amount does not cover the real costs of her development. "Russia does not trade skaters. But if we are talking about those who have been or are candidates for the national team, we are seriously considering applying a transfer fee when changing sports citizenship. From their young age, it is necessary to take into account not only training costs, but also possible lost income," Russian media quoted Sikharulidze as saying.
After this statement, it becomes clear that Veronika Zhilina, who is trying to move to the Azerbaijani national team, will not be able to submit a new application for at least two more seasons.
