It has been revealed why McLaren driver Lando Norris, the new world champion, did not receive a penalty for overtaking Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda off the track.
Idman.Biz reports that the stewards of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix justified their decision with a special statement.
"Car 4 overtook Car 22 off the track. However, this was due to Car 22 making several defensive maneuvers to protect its position. If Car 22 had not made these maneuvers, Car 4 would have passed it on the track, but was forced to go off the track to avoid a collision.
The driving standards regulations state that if a driver is 'forced off the track,' this is not considered intentional. Although technically the overtaking took place off the track, we decided not to take further action based on the above," the statement said.
It should be noted that Lando Norris finished the race in third place and became the world champion of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
