The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is supporting nuclear security at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Formula 1 for the first time.
According to Report, citing the UN website, IAEA experts have previously been in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
They consulted with the organizers of the event, together with experts from France and the UAE, and discussed the use of more than 100 radiation monitoring devices.
"Major events are key targets for criminals, including those who might potentially use nuclear and other radioactive materials. By expanding our nuclear security support to the fast-paced world of motor sport, we are extending our zone of vigilance, helping countries close critical gaps and keep the public safe," said IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
Yelena Buglova, Director of the IAEA's Nuclear Security Department, recalled the agency's systematic work: "For the past two decades, the IAEA has been at the forefront of integrating nuclear security protocols into protection measures at traditional public events – efforts that ensure the safety of millions of people. There is a consistent approach at events such as Formula 1 races that sees behind-the-scenes nuclear security as a key part of an overall package of measures, both before and during the event."
The IAEA previously supported Azerbaijan at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) and will continue to cooperate with the country during the CIS Games in November and the World Urban Forum in 2026. Since 2004, the Agency has assisted in ensuring nuclear security at 88 major events in 49 countries, and in 2023 the Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre was opened in Seibersdorf, Austria.
