Venezuela national team coach Fernando Batista shared his expectations regarding the away match against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, and spoke separately about the leader of the opposing team, Lionel Messi.
İdman.biz reports that the 38-year-old Messi had previously stated that the game against Venezuela could be his last home match for the national team.
"We will face the best team in the world. We knew in advance that this could be Leo's last official match in the qualifying stage on Argentinian soil. In any case, we see the strength of the coach [Lionel Scaloni] who knows how to build a structure regardless of who is on the field.
My opinion is always the same - we must think about the opponent's goal; if you only defend, in the long term it will end badly. I don't know how many coaches have already racked their brains about how to stop Messi. We will also try. I am here to spoil this Messi-fest - in a good way. We treat everything related to this issue with respect, but we are fighting for a direct ticket to the World Cup, or at least for the play-offs," Batista said.
The Argentina - Venezuela match will be held on September 5 in Buenos Aires. The game will start at 03:30 Baku time.
