Former Liverpool captain and midfielder Steven Gerrard has reacted to Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold's exclusion from the England squad for the upcoming friendly matches.
Idman.Biz reports that England will face Uruguay on March 27 and Japan on March 31 in their next friendly matches.
"I was very surprised. Yes, we have good options at right-back: Reece James is a world-class player, and Valentino Livramento is injured, but he can play on both flanks. I understand the selection of this squad, but I think Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the best 35 players in the country.
There are games where England need to play openly, break down a low block defense, and that's a shame. Trent Alexander-Arnold is exactly the kind of player who can come off the bench and change the course of a game with one pass. That's his level. That's why I'm surprised, I feel sorry for him.
But there are other factors to consider: How often does Trent play? Is he in peak form? Are there off-field factors affecting him? There are many factors to consider before selecting our six-week squad," Gerrard told TNT Sports.
