Previously undisclosed details have been officially confirmed. Quincy Promes, the 34-year-old striker of the Dutch national football team, admitted to stabbing his cousin during the initial hearing of the appeal stage.
Idman.Biz reports, citing "ESPN", that Promes, with the help of renowned lawyers Gert-Jan and Carry Knoops, decided to change his previous position.
The former national team member stated that it was a mistake to exercise his right to remain silent in the court of first instance:
"I had lost all faith in the judicial system, and I am currently receiving psychological help."
The incident occurred in July 2020 in Abcoude, Netherlands, during a family celebration. Promes accused his cousin of stealing family jewelry, which led to a fight between them. According to the lawyers, Promes stabbed him once during the conflict, but he was in a state of affect at that moment and was probably acting in self-defense.
In court, lawyer Carry Knoops also spoke about the trauma the footballer experienced during his arrest in Dubai. Promes said he heard the sounds of torture from other prisoners there and was interrogated for days on unrelated topics.
It should be noted that, in addition to the stabbing incident, Promes was also found guilty of involvement in the import of 1300 kg of cocaine and sentenced to 6 years in prison. The footballer, who attended the Amsterdam court, still does not intend to end his career.
