The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved a new rule regarding penalty kicks.
Idman.biz reports that if the person taking the penalty kick accidentally touches the ball twice (for example, if the ball rebounds off the supporting foot due to a slip) and the ball enters the goal, the kick can be retaken.
The new rule will come into effect on July 1, 2025.
Previously, any second touch of the ball during a penalty kick, even if accidental, would result in the kick being retaken or the goal not being counted.
A penalty kick is awarded for fouls a player can commit in their own penalty area, such as a field player touching the ball with their hands, rough play against an opponent, etc.
When a penalty kick is taken, the opposing goalkeeper must stand on the goal line, and the remaining players must be outside the penalty area.
