The court investigating the death of Diego Maradona, a world champion as part of the Argentina national team, has rejected the defense's request to remove two judges from the case.
Idman.biz reports with reference to the "L"Equipe" publication that the lawyers of Leopoldo Luque, Maradona's personal doctor and currently under investigation, applied to the court to remove two members of the three-judge panel that was re-formed after the first trial was canceled in July.
The lawyers referred to "certain concerns" that these judges would not be impartial. However, the judges rejected this motion, noting that the request was an attempt that "has no legal basis, is based only on individual evaluations, assumptions and speculations, and is aimed at artificially prolonging the process." The defense announced that it would appeal the decision.
It should be noted that the initial trial was invalidated at the end of May after two and a half months of hearings and the recusal of one of the three judges due to his participation in the creation of a documentary series about the process and playing a major role there.
7 medical workers - doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses - have been charged with "intentional homicide" in connection with Maradona's death. This is assessed as their irresponsibility, knowing that their negligence could cause death. They face imprisonment from 8 to 25 years.
Maradona died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60. The cause of death of the world champion was a heart attack. Three weeks before his death, he underwent brain surgery to remove a subdural hematoma. Hearings in this case began in March 2025 in the criminal court of San Isidro, Argentina.
