Turkish businessman Acun Ilıcalı is planning to sell the Slovenian club "Maribor." Sport24.az reports with reference to the Turkish press that the team's unsuccessful performance is forcing him to take this step.
According to reports, Ilıcalı acquired 74 percent of "Maribor"'s shares two years ago. The owner does not consider it necessary to invest in the club, as he has not been able to achieve the sporting and financial results he expected from the club, and intends to focus primarily on "Hull City," which he owns. If "Hull City" is promoted to the Premier League, it could generate approximately 300 million euros in revenue from broadcasting rights and sponsorships.
The Turkish businessman is ready to sell "Maribor" for approximately 9 million euros. Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis is interested in the club. Marinakis currently owns clubs such as "Nottingham Forest," "Olympiacos," and "Rio Ave."
It should be noted that "Maribor," which has won the Slovenian championship 16 times, has finished in second place for the last three seasons.
