Hosting UFC tournaments in Baku turns into a real path for Azerbaijani fighters to the world's most prestigious fighting organization.
İdman.Biz reports that Azerbaijani fighter Farman Gasimov has signed an official contract with the UFC today.
The athlete, who competes in the welterweight division, reached this stage with an impeccable record - five wins in five fights in his professional career, as well as successful performances in "Legacy Fighting Alliance" tournaments.
The 5-0 record alone demonstrates the athlete's potential. However, in the modern UFC reality, victories alone are not enough to get into the organization - proper timing, recognition, and a suitable platform are also important. It is the tournaments held in Baku that create such an opportunity for Azerbaijani representatives. When the world's largest fighting organization comes to the country, local fighters have the opportunity to attract the attention of fight organizers, managers, and international audiences.
This is not only important for Gasimov. His contract shows that hosting the UFC in Baku is not just a one-time sports show, but also a real means for the development of MMA in the country. The tournament brings world stars to Azerbaijan, attracting foreign media and fans. At the same time, it creates new opportunities for fighters who might previously have remained outside the global market.
A similar situation happened with Tofig Musayev last year. In April 2025, he signed an official contract with the UFC and already debuted on June 21 at the organization's first tournament in Baku. Although his first fight against Myktybek Orolbay ended in defeat, that wasn't the end of it.
In March 2026, Musayev had a brilliant fight against Ignacio Bahamondes, winning by unanimous decision. He and his opponent won a bonus for the best fight of the night. The UFC officially declared this match the "Fight of the Night".
Tournaments held in Baku are already resulting in concrete sporting achievements for Azerbaijani fighters. This helps Azerbaijan to be recognized as a country hosting world-class events. At the same time, it creates a direct connection between local fighters and the strongest fighting organization.
This is especially important against the background of a long-term agreement providing for the annual holding of "UFC Fight Night" tournaments in Baku until 2028. The first tournament held at the Baku Crystal Hall gathered more than 14,000 spectators. The next fight night will take place on June 27 at the National Gymnastics Arena.
For Azerbaijani MMA, this is no longer just a matter of prestige. This is an opportunity to build a system where talented fighters gain a clear path, motivation, and real goals they set for themselves. Previously, getting into the UFC seemed almost impossible. Now this path is more open: win fights, show yourself, and be ready when the UFC comes to Baku again.
The story of Farman Gasimov also shows this. The tournament in Baku does not guarantee anyone a place in the UFC, but it creates a real chance for fighters to get into this organization.
