Dutch former UFC heavyweight title contender Alistair Overeem expressed his confidence that the North American heavyweight division is currently in decline.
Idman.Biz reports that Overeem had his last fight in the UFC on February 7, 2021, against Russian Alexander Volkov. The fight ended with Volkov's victory by judges' decision.
"Unfortunately, it's no secret that the heavyweight division is in decline. Although the best fighters remain the best, things are not as exciting as they used to be. There used to be 15-20 heavyweight fighters with big names, but now there are fewer.
There are not many fighters from Japan now, although there were many in the 1990s and early 2000s... I think it's a bit like the ups and downs of the waves. Sometimes there are a lot, sometimes almost none. Sometimes the markets are saturated, and sometimes they are empty," Bloody Elbow quotes Overeem.
