Members of the Azerbaijan Sports Veterans Public Union visited Agacan Abiyev, one of the well-known figures in the country's sports, at his home on his birthday.
Idman.Biz reports that Abiyev's contributions to the development of Azerbaijani sports, education and the scientific environment were recalled at the meeting.
Born in 1937, Agacan Abiyev served as the rector of the Azerbaijan State Academy of Physical Culture and Sports for 28 years and was a deputy of the National Assembly for three terms.
He also headed the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation for many years, served as the Secretary General of the NOC, and held high positions in international boxing organizations. For his activities, he was awarded the orders "Glory", "Honor" and "For Service to the Motherland."
He was wished good health and a long life at the meeting. Fuad Aslanov, bronze medalist of the Athens 2004 Olympics, said that a national youth tournament in memory of Agajan Abiyev will be held at the Baku Boxing Center on December 15–19, 2025.
