An attempt to change the power balance of the internal combustion engine (ICE) in Formula 1 by increasing the fuel consumption limit from 2027 has failed.
Idman.Biz reports that the proposal did not receive the necessary support in discussions between engine manufacturers. Currently, the new regulations specify a power ratio between the ICE and the battery of approximately 50/50. Experts' proposal to change this ratio to at least 60/40 to solve energy management problems was met with resistance from manufacturers.
FIA Technical Director Jan Monchaux told Auto Motor und Sport that some manufacturers opposed the change, believing that the current rules would give them a competitive advantage. Other companies said it would take at least 16 months to develop a new engine and that 2027 was already too late for the change. Technically, increasing the power puts more strain on the parts and requires an additional cooling system, which the current designs are not designed for.
FIA official Nikolas Tombasis stressed that it is not legally possible to present the issue as a safety argument and implement it without the consent of the manufacturers. As the basic design of the cars must be approved by the summer break, there will be no innovations in the 2027 season. Adjustments are expected to be raised again as early as 2028.
