The FIFA World Cup is getting closer. FIFA has already announced details of the opening ceremonies, which will be held simultaneously in three countries for the first time in history.
According to Idman.Biz, the biggest football tournament of the four-year cycle will kick off in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. The opening ceremony will take place on June 11, 90 minutes before the first match of the WC-2026, Mexico vs. South Africa.
The leading performers include famous stars of the Spanish-speaking world: Alejandro Fernandez, Belinda, Denni Oshen, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Angeles Azules, and Mana. Among the performers more familiar to the world audience is also South African singer Tyla. The ceremony will be presented in an immersive format that fully reflects Mexican culture. One of the main visual symbols of the night will be "papel picado" (traditional Mexican art of cutting patterns on thin paper and turning them into colorful holiday decorations).
What makes this day even more special is the "Azteca" stadium. This arena will be the first stadium in history to host three World Cups - 1970, 1986, and 2026. It was here in 1970 that legendary Brazilian footballer Pele won his third and final World Cup title. In 1986, the "Azteca" stands witnessed one of the most famous matches in football history - Argentina vs. England (2:1) quarter-final match. In that match, Diego Maradona scored two epic goals in just a few minutes that went down in history as "Hand of God" and "Goal of the Century". The winner of that World Cup was the Argentine national team.
The baton of the opening ceremonies will pass from Mexico to Toronto. The first game to be held in Canada will be the national team's match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The solemn ceremony will take place on June 12. Performances by Alanis Morissette, Alessia Cara, Eliana, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé, Nora Fatehi, Vegedream, William Prince, and other famous performers are expected on stage. According to the organizers, the Canadian ceremony will be presented through images and moments that cover the country "from coast to coast". The main theme will be a mosaic symbolizing the country's multiculturalism and diverse communities.
The final opening show will take place in Los Angeles on June 12. On the same day, the US national team will play its first game against Paraguay. The music program at this ceremony is expected to be particularly star-studded. Performances by world-famous performers such as Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema, and Tyla are planned on stage. FIFA has already indicated that the list of participating stars may be expanded further. All the details of the ceremony have not yet been fully disclosed, which further increases interest. Expectations are that this show will be one of the most spectacular of the opening ceremonies.
Thus, the opening concept of the WC-2026 is to present football through the unique identity of the host countries. These countries, united by a common rhythm, will symbolize a common passion and love for sports.
It should be noted that the WC-2026 will cover a record number of 104 games, and the matches will be held in 16 host cities. The final match will take place on July 19 at the "New York-New Jersey" stadium.
