One of the biggest sensations of the season occurred in the Portuguese Cup.
Idman.Biz reports that "Torreense," a representative of the Portuguese second league, won the national cup by defeating "Sporting" 2:1 in the final. The match took place at the "Estadio Nacional do Jamor" stadium in Lisbon.
"Torreense" started the game quickly and opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a goal from Kevin Zohi. "Sporting" equalized in the 54th minute with a goal from Luis Javier Suarez. Regular time ended with a score of 1:1.
In extra time, "Torreense" scored the decisive goal. In the 113th minute, Stopira converted a penalty and secured a historic victory for his team. "Sporting" was left with one player less after Maximiliano Araujo received a red card in the 109th minute.
This result is considered a historic achievement for "Torreense." This is the club's first major title in its 109-year history. The club had previously only appeared in the Portuguese Cup final in 1956, when they lost to "Porto." This time, however, the representative of Torres Vedras completed their return to the final after 70 years with a cup win.
"Estadio Manuel Marques," where "Torreense" plays its home games, has a capacity of only 2431 spectators.
It should be noted that the winner of the Portuguese Cup gains the right to participate in the UEFA Europa League next season. In addition to this, "Torreense" continues to fight in the play-offs to advance to the elite. The team will play the return match with "Casa Pia."
