Former Netherlands defender John Heitinga has been dismissed as head coach of Ajax.
Idman.Biz reports that his contract, which ran until the summer of 2027, was terminated at the club's initiative.
"This is a painful decision. But if we look at the last few months, we have to admit that things have not gone as we expected. We have seen very little progress and are unfairly losing points. We know that a new coach may need time to get used to a squad that has undergone changes.
We gave John time, but we believe it is best for the club to appoint someone else as head coach. We hope to introduce the new head coach as soon as possible. We thank John for his efforts and wish him all the best," said Ajax technical director Alex Cruz in an interview with the club's press service.
John Heitinga took over Ajax in July 2025. This was the former footballer's first experience leading a major team. He previously coached youth and youth teams at the Amsterdam club, and from July 2024 to May 2025 he was assistant coach to Liverpool head coach Arne Slot.
Ajax are fourth in the Eredivisie with 20 points from 11 games and are eight points behind leaders Feyenoord.
Ajax are Qarabağ's opponent in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The match between the teams will take place on December 10 in Baku.
