Following Italy's national football team failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, significant changes are expected in the leadership of the organization.
Idman.Biz reports, citing "La Stampa", that former "Milan" player Paolo Maldini could become the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
The previous head of FIGC, Gabriele Gravina, left his post at his own request. Presidential elections will be held on June 22, and candidates must be approved 40 days before the elections.
The Italian national team lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final of the European qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup (1:1, 1:4 on penalties). Thus, Italian football players will miss the World Cup for the third time in a row.
In 2018-2019, Maldini worked as the director of development for the Italian national team, then became technical director and was dismissed in June 2023.
Maldini holds the record for the number of games played in the Italian championship (647). As part of "Milan", he won the Italian championship seven times, the national cup once, the Italian Super Cup five times, the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup. Maldini is also a silver and bronze medalist of the European and World Championships as part of the Italian national team.
