Icelandic national team defender Viktor Palsson has shared his expectations on the eve of the match against the Azerbaijani national team in Baku as part of the qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.Biz reports that the football player, in an interview with the Fotbolti.net portal, said that his team is ready for a completely different game this time compared to the first match in Reykjavik.
It should be noted that Palsson himself scored the first goal at the end of the first half in that meeting. The match ended with a 0:5 defeat for the Azerbaijani national team.
"The upcoming game is very interesting to me. It won't be like the first match: we are on their field and the opponent has a new head coach," said V. Palsson.
He emphasized that despite the difficulty of the away match, the Icelanders will only play to win:
"We are neither overly confident, nor do we look at past results. We just intend to win this game and we don't hide it. At the same time, we shouldn't think that we came here and everything will be easy," said V. Palsson.
The defender also expressed satisfaction with the team's progress under the leadership of Arnar Gunnlaugsson:
"I think everything is going in the right direction. Of course, there are minor setbacks, but overall the situation is good and we are on the right track. Arnar pays a lot of attention to details and we like that. It's gratifying to see how diverse our game has become," said V. Palsson.
According to him, the head coach and football players learn from each other and the atmosphere in the team remains positive:
"The best thing is that we can fulfill what they want from us. We are constantly learning, and so is he. I would say that our progress in this direction is very positive," the football player added.
Let us remind you that the match between the national teams of Azerbaijan and Iceland will be held on November 13, Thursday, and will start at 21:00 Baku time.
