The Iranian national football team's base camp for the FIFA World Cup is being moved from the USA to Mexico.
Idman.Biz reports that this was announced by the president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj. According to him, after negotiations with FIFA and tournament officials, the request to change the team's previous base plan in Arizona was accepted.
Mehdi Taj stated that the Iranian national team will be based in Tijuana, located on the border between Mexico and the United States, near the Pacific Ocean:
"All base camps of the countries participating in the World Cup must be approved by FIFA. Fortunately, after the requests we sent, and the meetings we held with FIFA and World Cup officials, our request to move the team's base from the United States to Mexico was accepted."
The Iranian side explains this step by reducing possible difficulties related to visas and logistics. According to Mehdi Taj, Tijuana is located closer to the games that will be held in Los Angeles, and it may also be possible for the team to travel directly to Mexico with Iran Air.
The Iranian national team will compete in Group G with the national teams of New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. The team will play its first two matches in Los Angeles: against New Zealand on June 15, and against Belgium on June 21. The Iranian national team will face Egypt in their last group match in Seattle on June 26.
It should be noted that the FIFA World Cup will be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19. For the first time, 48 teams will participate in the tournament.
