England's women's national football team was subjected to abuse on social media last Sunday.
Idman.biz reports that three thousand posts containing "aggressive or disturbing content" about the England team were made during the 2025 European Championship final.
British online threat monitoring service "Moonshot" analyzed threats of violence and insults directed at players of the England national team and head coach Sarina Wiegman. The study found that most social networks did not remove this offensive content.
The company investigated 73,400 posts shared on 30 social networks during the final game. Of these, 3,000 were "overtly hostile or disturbing content," including "vague abusive expressions" and misogyny.
"Moonshot" reported 95 posts—those directed at specific players or the head coach—to social platforms. However, 99% of these posts were not removed.
Of these 95 posts, 42% were racist insults, 29% were misogynistic, 12% were sexual objectification, and another 11% were related to sexual orientation.
The most attacks were directed at 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang, who was named the tournament's best young player and entered the field in the middle of the second half of the final. The majority of posts were related to her skin color.
