Former Italian national team player Dino Bacco criticized the current state of Italian football against the backdrop of the country's national team failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.Biz reports that he recalled Serie A being the most attractive championship in the world at one time, and emphasized that the league has now lost its prestige.
The veteran player stated that in the past, all footballers wanted to play in Italy. According to Bacco, although there were fewer foreign players at that time, they were world-class stars, and clubs were more careful when making selections.
Bacco noted that Serie A, along with the Premier League, was the most competitive championship, citing the names of the Dutch players in "Milan" - Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, the Germans in "Inter" - Lothar Matthäus, Andreas Brehme, Jürgen Klinsmann, as well as the Brazilians in the 80s - Zico and Paulo Falcao, and especially noted that numerous "Golden Ball" winners played in the league during that period.
Dino Bacco sadly stated that currently the best players go to Spain, England or France, while others turn to Italy.
