The leader of Azerbaijani women's chess, Ulviyya Fataliyeva, made a successful start at the individual European Championship held in Batumi, Georgia, and immediately rose to the top of the tournament table.
Idman.Biz reports that Fataliyeva showed the maximum result in the first two rounds of the continental championship and, although she shared 1st-18th places with two points, she took first place in the tournament table according to additional indicators.
In the first two rounds, the Azerbaijani chess player defeated Margaret Olde from Estonia and Maka Purtseladze from Georgia. In the third round, Fataliyeva will face our compatriot Turkan Mammadyarova.
It should be noted that Gunay Mammadzade, the former leader of Azerbaijani women's chess, is also participating in the European Championship held in Batumi. She returned to big chess after becoming a mother last year. She scored 1.5 points at the start and took 31st place.
Govhar Beydullayeva and Turkan Mammadyarova also scored 1.5 points, sharing 24th and 29th places, respectively. Other Azerbaijani chess players scored less than 1 point. In total, 11 chess players from Azerbaijan are competing in Batumi.
It should be noted that Govhar Beydullayeva was also the only Azerbaijani chess player to participate in the men's (open) European Championship held in Katowice, Poland. She scored 6 points in that tournament and took 174th place among 501 participants. In the open competition, she was 7th among 56 female participants.
In addition, the top 10 chess players at the end of the European Championship in Batumi will qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
