Islam Makhachev defeated Australian Jack Della Maddalena by unanimous decision in the main fight at UFC 322 in New York, becoming a two-division champion in the UFC.
Idman.Biz reports that this victory makes Makhachev the 11th fighter in UFC history to win titles in two divisions. He also tied Anderson Silva's record by winning his 16th consecutive fight.
MMA stars commented on the Russian fighter's success to RBK-Sport as follows:
Khabib Nurmagomedov – former UFC champion:
"I'm very happy. Our team is progressing day by day. We are winning championships in different weight classes. My goal is for them to become even stronger. We work for this morning and night."
Ilia Topuria – UFC lightweight champion:
"Jack needs separate wrestling training only. He performed very poorly... I want emotions from Makhachev, but he is the most boring fighter in this game. My confidence in him is growing day by day."
Jeff Monson – former UFC fighter:
"He is already on the list of legends. Maddalena couldn't do anything to him. Makhachev showed that he is a versatile fighter, this is a historic success."
Merab Dvalishvili – UFC bantamweight champion:
"Congratulations to the new champion! This title is a completely deserved victory."
Belal Muhammad – former UFC champion:
"I'm happy that Makhachev is a double champion. Khabib and his team deserved it."
Shavkat Rakhmonov – UFC welterweight fighter:
"Congratulations to Makhachev, great performance. But the real contender for this division is still me."
Dustin Poirier – former UFC interim champion:
"Congratulations to Khabib and Islam. It's amazing to see what they're doing. He won a belt 15 pounds heavier than him. This is the result of his and his team's great work."
